Italian philosopher and politician Niccolo Machiavelli advising that rulers should seek the support of the people because seriously alienating a population to hate their rulers will likely be a disaster for the ruler. This reflects Machiavelli's republicanism as he believed that the best form of a government is based on the consent of its people.

In societies that had a monarchy he believed it should ideally be modeled as close as possible to a republic that would make it effective if it seeks the consent of its population to be truly legitimate and to avoid civil unrest erupting.
