Description

Flag of Jazira, an autonomous constituent state within Iraq in an alternate history where Iraq is internally partitioned to have an Autonomous State of Kurdistan for the Kurds of Iraq and an Autonomous State of Jazira for the Sunni Muslim Arabs of Iraq. This alternate history could go in two directions, Jazira stays in Iraq or Jazira secedes from Iraq and becomes an independent country. See here for more details: yamalama1986.deviantart.com/ar…

Jazira is founded several years after ISIS is militarily crushed, following negotiations involving the United States, Russia, Iran, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and others to achieve a peaceful internal division of Iraq. The state continues to have problems with Sunni extremists but its policy of seeking to maximize autonomy from the central Iraqi government and its political leaders both having severe punishments for people caught in acts of terrorism while pressing for for the preservation of Sunni Islam both within Jazira and in Baghdad and elsewhere in Iraq give it the balance needed to gain political clout and eventually overcome extremists in the region who reduce in strength.

In real history, Jazira was a historic region in the Middle East in what is now northern Iraq during the Abbasid Caliphate, and it existed when Iraq was a separate entity that only included the southern half of Iraq. Although this Jazira is different than then as it includes Mosul that is its capital when Mosul was a separate entity then and this alternate history Jazira includes territory in the desert of the west of present day Iraq. The name Jazira was chosen to be a unique local name for this Sunni Arab state. See here for the actual region of Jazira in history: yamalama1986.deviantart.com/ar…
